Garden Party Iris - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina Art

 Garden Party Iris

Garden Party Iris is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio. One of my friends asked me if I paint every day. The answer is yes, unless I'm on an airplane on my way to teach a workshop, I paint every day. I've been painting every day for about 7 years now. I have a condition called the Daily Painters Compulsion. I'm pretty sure I should be on some sort of strong medication for it.

Today I went to the store for lemons and found yet another new vase. Then I saw these iris, and then the delphiniums, and then bunches and bunches of fresh peonies. Then I saw a really cute green roller bag I could use on the plane to stuff my treasures in for my trips to and from workshops. I won't tell you what my grocery bill ended up being, for that bag of lemons, but let's just say this is how things rapidly spiral out of control, when I'm allowed to go shopping with no adult supervision whatsoever.

White Rhapsody Rose Arbor and Braving the Harsh Elements in the Florida Wilds - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina Art

White Rhapsody Rose Arbor

White Rhapsody Rose Arbor is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio, the landscapes are still calling my name and rose arbors are one of my favorite things to paint (and photograph) in the whole wide world. I have so many great images from Coronado, California, but White Rhapsody is based on the bougainvillea rose arbor we painted plein air in Florida last spring. You may recall that this was the "kinder, gentler" plein air class I taught where we provided tables and chairs under the beautiful Florida sun and 'neath the swaying palms. Once we were all set up and happy, content with knowing the owner of the property was quite happy we were painting his flowers, the neighbor's sprinkler system went off, making us all run for high ground. Just goes to show, you must be prepared for everything nature, and lawncare, throws at you whilst braving those harsh elements painting in the wild...

Little French Houses is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio, I've been having fun with my photo library from Southern France this week, and sense a few more of these landscapes will be appearing on my easel over the next week or so! My French brushes are all warmed up, and I sense lavender in their future...

The Wanderer -  Romantic French Kitty
by Nancy Medina

The Wanderer is the newest painting in my French cottage series, I brought home close to a thousand photos from our trip to Southern France last September, and every time I look through them I discover new little treasures. I love putting the kitties into the scenes, they always add just a little mystery and fun, and make my imagination spin off little stories and adventures for these four footed fluffballs. This little kitty was based on the photos I got of Loki, the resident kitty at Le Vieux Couvent, where I'll be teaching in August. I have a few seats left and would love to have you join me for this dream painting getaway. Click here for more information on France.

French Rest Stop Sunflower Garden - Flower and Landscape Paintings by Nancy Medina Art

French Rest Stop Sunflower Garden
by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

French Rest Stop is a new sunflower garden in Flower Mound Studio, I was needing some warm color to chase away the winter chill and fused some of my favorite photos from my back yard garden along with my trip to France together to create this little floral-scape. My adirondack chairs are bright blue, so I shifted their color to white so they wouldn't compete with my blue flower beds in the foreground. I'm imagining a nice warm summer day, with temps in the high 90s, and an icy glass of lemonade nearby...

A True Story of Fashion and Romance ~ She Wore a White Dress With Roses - Paintings by Nancy Medina Art

I'm absolutely thrilled and delighted to be featured for the Elegance show for Contemporary Fine Arts International this month! Here's the story behind the image shared - She Wore a White Dress With Roses.

One of my father's favorite stories was about the night he and my mother (who were just courting at the time) went to a dance hall in St. Louis to hear a live band play and dance the night away. My mother worked as a secretary for a law firm and still lived at home with my grandmother and grandfather. Every pay day she would go out and buy herself a new outfit. Read more....

Heat Wave Sunflowers and a Florida Workshop - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Heat Wave Sunflowers and Delphiniums

Class Demonstration

Heat Wave Sunflowers was my class demonstration today in sunny Florida. The day started out a bit chilly, but we hit the 80 degree mark by afternoon. I don't mean to rub it in, but at one point I had to turn up the air conditioning just a bit. I'm always a bit sad on the last day of class, telling friends goodbye and telling that ultra giant box of chocolates goodbye, can you blame me if I cried just a little bit? Tomorrow it's back home to the boss, Studio Director AnnieBee, and her minions, and the hubby who said he has missed me. It's good to be loved. I hope your family, friends and little four footed babies are nearby and keeping you warm today, where-ever you may be!

Class Demonstration

When I saw the little boy hopping up and down at 7 am this morning in my hotel lobby and pointing, I thought maybe he really liked the koi pond here at the Gaylord Palms. Imagine my surprise when I saw what he was really excited about - the resident gators! Fortunately these leathery little guys didn't seem too interested in climbing through the iron bars to munch on the tourists and they even ignored their lazy turtle neighbors. Excuse me, Mister Bellman, there's an alligator in my room.... Note to self, if you hear scuffling on the carpet outside your door, do NOT open the door without your running shoes on.

We painted roses until the seagulls came home in sunny Florida today. Tomorrow we tackle sunflowers and, if they cooperate and open a bit more, some tulips, too!

Dreams of Summer Hydrangeas and Painting Florida Flowers - Nancy Medina Art

Dreams of Summer Hydrangeas
by Nancy Medina

Class Demonstration

20X16
Oil on Linen Panel

We hit the flower jackpot in Florida yesterday, my hostess with the most-ess Ann drove me to a warehouse of fresh flowers as soon as I landed in the sunshine state yesterday. On top of that, she failed to restrain me in any way, shape, or fashion, as I tossed fresh peonies, hydrangeas, Japanese iris, daisies, delphiniums, and all sorts of other colorful plants onto our my shopping cart. Oh, and a few new vases, too, (because one can never have too many sparkley vases....).  Today we painted hydrangeas until the seagulls came home, and tomorrow we're going to warm up our pink brushs with some lovely roses and peonies. I do so appreciate my flower models. They don't fidget, they don't complain about the bright lights, they don't eat much and never, ever show up for a shoot after partying all night with bags under their eyes.  Read more....

French Village Lavender and Sunflowers
by Nancy Medina

French Village Lavender and Sunflowers is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, as the pug helpers lay about. I believe they are on strike, although they cannot hold up signs. It's more of a snoring laying about kind of strike. They don't seem the least bit excited about my big news today - I'm teaching my first workshop in Arkansas and you are cordially invited! *confetti!!* I'll be teaching in Hot Springs, a place I've always wanted to visit. Even better, it will not be in winter when I'm there. Here's a bit more info below. In the meantime, I have to wake up my snoring helpers and tuck them into bed. Sweet dreams flower friends!

The cold weather has truly arrived, so the pugs are piled atop one another around the easel, all in the same bed, despite there being four perfectly good beds available. I'm imagining you're on a beach right now, with a palm tree swaying nearby. Don't forget your sunscreen, for heaven's sake!

Thank you so much for all the kind notes about my Mom, she is doing a little better today. I talked to her on the phone and she told me "They got me a photo quilt!" I said, "I know!" Her appetite has picked up, also, which is a relief. Carlos made her a big pot of navy beans with ham and we bought her a can of her favorite cheese popcorn (Garrett's!) so I'm hoping she'll still have a great appetite when I visit her next week. How lucky I am to still have my Mama to hug!!!

Rush Hour Rooster - Paintings by Nancy Medina Art

Rush Hour Rooster
by Nancy Medina

Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Rush Hour Rooster was one of the most colorful personalities I met while visiting San Juan Bautista Mission in Central California. He and his harem were in a quite a hurry when I nabbed a few photos - after all, the dinner bell was ringing! I can't think of a better way to show the new year has rushed in - can you believe it's 2015? Before we know it, it will be 2035 and we'll all be living on space pods with faux ocean breezes blowing in through our hologram beach scene windows! Hopefully warm beach scenes.....

I hope you have had a wonderful 2014 - I asked my art friends to share their favorite 2014 memories on my Facebook page this week, and the winning entry will receive an original 20X16 hydrangea painting. Some of the entries made me cry, some made me laugh, you can see them all right here. I'd love to hear from you. Thank you so much for joining me for this wild and crazy, artful and colorful year. May 2015 bring you incredible amounts of color and joy!

I broke out the red brushes to help stave off the polar vortex today! The hubby has been in and out of the ER for a few days, and finally is doing better. I cannot think of anything I want more for the new year than a healthy hubby. First of all, I'm a terrible nurse, and I only know how to cook using the microwave!  I hope you have good health, and a healthy cook, in the coming year!

Violet Sky Sunflower and Going to the Birds - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina Art

http://nancymedina.fineartstudioonline.com/workszoom/1639813

Violet Sky Sunflower Solo
by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Violet Sky Sunflower Solo was one of a few new paintings progressing in Flower Mound Studio, including a rendition of one of my favorite birds, the Roseate Spoonbill. I love these birds because they are...pink! I'm still working on this little feathered fellow, right now he looks a bit like he's just survived a hurricane, so his plumes need combing and his legs need a shave, too, while we're at it! Today the hubby came home from work with a bug, so I've been nursing hubby, obeying the pugs, and painting. At least I'm getting my exercise, not to mention reacquainting myself with that room I rarely enter, the kitchen. There's a big white square thing with fire coming out of it, I'm pretty sure that's the stove. Thank goodness they invented the microwave, though. I shudder to think what would happen if I turned on that thing that produces actual flames.
