New Sunflower and Lavender Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Sunny Life," Provence ©2015 Niki Gulley
30" x 48" textured oil painting

Sunny Life is inspired from one of the amazing locations we take our students to on our Provence Art Trek. We actually set up our easels in this gorgeous lavender and sunflower field, where the flowers seem to stretch forever. The color and aroma explosion were out of this world – a painter's and photographer's dream come true. Words can't even describe how special that moment was to paint there surrounded by all that beauty!

Taking my plein air sketch that I painted on location above, I set to capture that joyous feeling back in my studio. Pulling in closer to the sunflowers so you could see their beaming faces and get a sense of their scale, I added a few more color surprises to add to the happy mood (and I didn't have to worry about getting too close in fear of bee stings in the studio!) I hope you, too, experience the beauty and contentment of being in Provence through my painting.

If you'd like more information or a brochure on one of our upcoming Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshops listed below, please let me know. We are taking reservations for this years trip to Tuscany, Italy, so please let us know if you would like to join us.  For more details, e-mail Niki@NikiGulley.com or go to nikigulley.com/artreks.

New Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

"Intertwining Beauty" ©2015 Niki Gulley
36" x 60" textured oil on canvas

Intertwining Beauty was inspired by a recent trip to the Sangre de Cristo mountains. The aspen forest was so dense and beautiful. I loved the pops of vibrant fall colors peeking through the tall, tangled, web of white knobby trunks. Ruby reds grab your attention while staccato strokes of emerald, amethyst and topaz lead your eye around the canvas. I hope you can feel the energy found in nature and its power to invigorate your spirit.

I painted these aspen trees with extremely thick paint and palette knife. The resulting canvas is loaded with texture, color and energy! I've painted it on 1 and 1/2 inch deep stretcher bars, with the image continuing around the edges so that it can be hung as is frameless for a contemporary look.

If interested in more information, please e-mail Niki Gulley.

Since the Gulf of Mexico has now moved inland,  I decided to paint inside. Scenes around the house in interesting light always attract me to paint them. This one was one of those. Time of day more towards the evening on an overcast day with light coming through the south facing window onto the washer.

Our utility room is quite big and had a nice area to setup just in view of the doorway and lucky to have had a light to light up my palette and painting as I painted without causing in more added light to the scene I wanted to paint.

Close to Heaven Peonies and a North Texas Workshop - Flower Painting Classes by Nancy Medina Art

Close to Heaven Pink Peonies
by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Close to Heaven Pink Peonies is based on the blossoms that took their sweet time opening this week. I finally put my fresh peonies in the fridge, and had forgotten about them until tonight, when we ran out of creme and I was searching about. Something tells me I'll be painting them again soon, unless, of course, they get lost behind the orange juice.

I'm delighted to announce my new Texas workshop, July 10-12, designed especially for the traveling student. The hotel picks you up at the airport, and takes you to class each day. I know I've spent many a moment chewing my nails over how to get to and from a class in a strange city before, and I'm tickled to provide a more convenient option. We'll be painting florals and landscapes, and I hope to see you there, blossom friends!

Bountiful by Kay Wyne

Bountiful
36" x 60" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Painting
Starting with a photograph of John's roses, I quickly added some other flowers to the canvas.  This painting is bold, colorful and graphic.  It has brushstrokes that you can see, along with palette knife work, both creating lots of texture.  This painting is hanging at the studio drying, and while I may make some minor changes, it is completed.  The thick paint will take a while to dry, and then I will need to varnish.  The sides of the canvas are painted black, and a frame is optional.  Thanks for looking at Bountiful,  Contact Kay for more information on this contemporary floral.  Kay

"Heightened Awareness" Palette Knife Aspen Treetop Painting by Niki Gulley

"Heightened Awareness” ©2015 Niki Gulley
48” x 30” textured mixed media on canvas

In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up in into the treetops and the heavens above. Choosing vibrant, cheerful yellows contrasted against a vivid blue sky and arranging the aspens in a circular pattern heightened by thick, curving paint strokes, both add to that joyful, playful feeling of hope and discovery.

This painting is inspired by the docks and harbors that I visited as a child in New Jersey.  Many Sunday afternoon drives took us through the Port Newark area to watch cargo ships be loaded with goods destined for foreign lands.  If you look carefully, you'll see the loading crane and the pilings!

This heavily textured original abstract painting on canvas is wired and ready to hang.  The sides are painted a black/brown micaceous iron oxide and it does not need to be framed.  Only the finest professional acrylic paints have been used in the creation of this painting.

Sitting on my easel....by Kay Wyne

Sitting on my easel....
36" x 36" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Landscape
I started this colorful landscape a couple of months ago and didn't know what I was going to do with the background.  So I left it, and went on to some other paintings.  It would of been easier for me if I figured the background out before I started on the foreground.  But I don't always do things the easy and most logical method.  So, I am going to change the sky, horizon line and background.  So pretty much 2/3 of the canvas will be a different color palette.  This is my project for the week...I hope to post a completed painting soon.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay

Color My World by Kay Wyne

Color My World
14" x 10" Canvas on Panel
Contemporary Floral Landscape
This painting is drying at the studio.  I have two layers of paint on the panel, then lots of palette knife work.  I used impasto to get some texture on the smooth canvas.  The photograph may not show, but the clouds are thick, broad strokes of oils with the knife.  I will get this framed once it is dry...it needs to sit right now so that the paint won't get smudged up.  Feel free to contact ME for purchasing info.  Thanks for looking, Kay

A Free Tulip Video and Framed in Violet White Roses - Flower Painting Classes and Workshops by Nancy Medina Art

Framed in Violet White Roses
by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Framed in Violet White roses celebrates the push and pull of warm and cool violets, and how it can be just so much fun to let your hair down and play with color. Today the pugs and I are celebrating in the studio the release of my full-length, free tulip video. Just a flower footnote for all those who watch, unlike my professional DVDs, Pink Pirouette Tulip on video was just an amateur production done by yours truly, with her puggy assistants, so the sound is not high quality. I beg your forgiveness for that, though, if you listen closely, as a consolation prize, you might just hear snoring, snorting, barking and other assorted puggy noises! Stay tuned to the end for some fun out-takes involving the helpers!

Click here to watch your free video!

I hope you enjoy this little tulip treat, I created it for you as a thanks for walking with me on this flower-strewn path of my first year as a full-time artist, and also to celebrate hitting 14,000 Facebook fans. I thank you from the bottom of my heart - with flowers - and pug kisses, too!

My Kind of Day by Kay Wyne

My Kind Of Day
8" x 8" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Landscape Painting
This is small landscape painting was painted with a flat brush and with thick oils.  The painting has depth, and you can follow the path into the field, back to the horizon.  I want the viewer to feel as if he or she is looking out into the spacious landscape, looking at the beautiful vista.

Here is a pic of the painting hanging, with the edges of the gallery wrap canvas...small parts of the black background peek through.  Framing is not necessary...once I varnish this piece it will be ready to hang!  Contact Kay for more info.  Thanks for looking!  Kay

New "Golden Aura II" Palette Knife Birch Painting by Niki Gulley

"Golden Aura II" ©2015 Niki Gulley
36" x 48" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Painted with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives so that this canvas is loaded with texture and bursting with color, flickering autumn leaves seem to almost dance in a gentle breeze. I wanted this scene to be filled with movement and energy, so I incorporated a lot of diagonal and curving shapes in the design to suggest that feeling. While combining short staccato strokes along with long sweeping passes with my palette knives also increase that sense of motion. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of walking through the woods on a beautiful fall day, letting your cares slip away and your spirit being invigorated.

Oh Happy Day! by Kay Wyne

Oh Happy Day!
18" x 36" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Still Life Painting
My favorite canvas shape is the square, but I really like the canvas I picked for this horizontal still life.  The vase of flowers is intentionally off-center.  The bouquet fills the canvas and is spilling over the edges, implying that the bouquet is full and over-flowing.  I used the palette knife on most of this painting.  The canvas has plenty of texture color.  I focused on lavenders and greens and greys and mixed piles and piles of oils when I painted this.  This painting is for sale, and is hanging at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas for the "Local Color" exhibit.  It will be up for the next week, then a new show, "It's A Small World" begins June 6th.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay

"Reaching for the Heavens" Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

“Reaching for the Heavens” ©2015 Niki Gulley
48" x 36” textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

In this painting, I wanted you to you to experience the amusement of looking up into the treetops – just like you did when you were a kid. Lying on the ground, not a care in the world, you gaze in wonderment as the clouds drift by. Choosing warm yellows and reds while utilizing thick chunky staccato strokes, add to that childlike whimsy and I hope you are transported back to a happy, carefree time and place.

Rattled by Kay Wyne

Rattled
24" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Painting
I remember the day that I painted this contemporary abstract.  As I was starting this painting in the studio when I received a very annoying telephone call from a gallery owner.  The interruption shifted my mood and the plans I had for the canvas.  I was derailed.  The color palette that I used and the bold strokes tell that on the canvas.  I used oil sticks and oil paints with brushes and a palette knife to indicate the frustration and energy I had that day.  This painting is at the studio, and would love to move to a new home.  Contact Kay for more info.  Thanks for looking at this blog...Kay

New Indian Paintbrush Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Spring Forth II," Texas Hill Country ©2015 Niki Gulley
24" x 24"" textured oil painting on gallery wrap canvas

I wanted this Texas wildflower painting to be filled with color and joy! Using thick oil paint and palette knives, I arranged the bluebonnets and winecups diagnonally to create an energy and movement, keeping your eye traveling from blossom to blossom. Choosing a vivid gold background to add warmth and contrast to the scene, also illumintes the petals and grasses from behind causing them to glow. Hung alone or with Spring Forth II, these Texas wildflowers are sure to lift your spirits and brighten up your home.

"Spring Forth II" along with several of my new palette knife paintings are on exhibit at the Good Art Company Gallery in Fredericksburg, TX. If interested in more information on pricing or purchasing this palette knife bluebonnet painting, please contact goodartcompany.com/gac/.

Color, texture, and movement are found in this contemporary palette knife painting.  I used brushes, palette knives and a sculpting tool to achieve this abstract look.  I actually started with a painting underneath...one that I wasn't happy with.  So when scraping through the top layer of oils the colors from the first painting show through.  This painting is hanging at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay

Inspired by our travels to Italy, cypress trees rise out of the rolling landscape signaling that you have arrived in Tuscany.
