Just Because by Kay Wyne

Just Because
36" x 36" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Palette Knife Painting
My inspiration for this painting was a beautiful arrangement that son in-law Wes gave to daughter Lindsay. I asked what the occasion was......."just because" was the answer that I got. I used thick strokes with the palette knife.
Here is a close-up of the painting....the paint is built up on the canvas. Contact Pam Massar at The Dutch Art Gallery Dallas TX if you are interested in purchasing.  Thanks for viewing this art blog.  Have a good day...Kay

Abstract Painting Workshop

Highland Arts Guild
318 Main St.
Marble Falls, Texas 78654

March 26 - 28, 2015
$350.00

This fun, 3-day workshop is for the intermediate and advanced artist who is familiar with painting in acrylics and wants to loosen up by  experimenting  with innovative techniques of applying and manipulating paint on canvas.

We will begin each day with a demo and a short discussion on how to establish a good composition.  Once that is done, we will dive right in and start having fun by applying paint loosely with brushes, tools and even hands!  We will learn how to paint intuitively, allowing the painting to lead the way and establish its own "voice".

Students are encouraged to work on large canvases,  allowing  them the freedom to break loose and enjoy the painting process with no stress and lots of fun!

Contemporary Abstract Palette Knife Painting
Red dragonflies are all over the gardens at the Dallas Arboretum.  I worked off of a photograph taken by friend Mark Malone.  It was an amazing photo, and I went abstract with it.  I exaggerated the colors, and implied that the dragonfly was fluttering over some flowers.  The oils were applied with a palette knife so there is plenty of texture on the canvas.  Sides of the canvas are painted, so framing is optional.  Contact Kay for purchasing info.  Thanks, Kay

"Embrace" textured birch oil painting by Niki Gulley

"Embrace" ©2015 Niki Gulley
textured oil painting • 36" x 36" on wrap around canvas

I like to play with blurring the lines between realism and abstraction so that some things are left up to the viewer’s imagination. In the case of “Embrace,” I chose this unusual, asymmetrical heart-shaped composition and teased your eye with foreground and background emerging and disappearing to create a more abstract scene. Choosing fiery reds contrasted against turquoise blues cause the colors to dance and vibrate. While diagonal strokes and a circular composition combined with the vibrant hues, create a sense of energy, movement and harmony. Using all of these elements, I wanted to create an uplifting, whimsical, passionate painting filled with youthful hope and discovery.

"Embrace" is available through the Good Art Company Gallery in Fredericksburg, TX (http://www.goodartcompany.com/gac/.)

Contemporary Still Life Painting
This contemporary oil painting has been drying at the studio.  It is on a chunky (2 1/2") stretcher bar, and sides of the canvas are painted.  So frame is optional.  The colors are crisp and clean.  I was careful not to mix my oils too much, which could lead to the dreaded MUD.  The corals, oranges and rosey colors pop with the grey/blue background.  Hints of green, turquoise and whites make the florals come alive.  Contact Kay for more information on this painting.  Thanks for checking out this blog!  Kay

Pink Azalea Cottage and My Great-Grandmother's House - Flower Painting Classes and Workshops by Nancy Medina Art

http://nancymedina.fineartstudioonline.com/workszoom/1691534

Pink Azalea Cottage
by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Pink Azalea Cottage is a scene that might seem familiar to anyone who has grown up in East Texas and seen the azaleas in full bloom. The cottage is a memory of my great-grandmother's home in Palestine, Texas, where she raised a family and had a garden and did all the cooking and housekeeping even though she was blind. Nanny used to be able to tell which plants were which by smell, touch and taste. My mother spent every summer of her childhood with her grandmother. Mom said she would take the train down from St. Louis to Palestine after school let out for the year, and the summers she spent in Palestine were the happiest times for her growing up.

If you walk down the path and open the back porch screen door, you'll enter Nanny's big kitchen, with the formica table. Beyond the kitchen, through a large arched doorway, you will find her formal living room, with a collection of plates from around the world along the walls, and her favorite rocker next to the radio just under the windows by the cuckoo clock. This is where Nanny spent every afternoon listening to her favorite gospel show. I imagine there were many, many days my mother was in her lap, being rocked to sleep, with the sound of birds outside the open screen windows, the clock chiming the hour and half hour, and the sound of the voice on the radio. What a dream come true it would be to be able to travel back in time and see this tableau, and my mother's golden curls, as she lay sleeping in her grandmother's arms.

course it was colorful and had lots of texture.  Pam Massar,

"Natural Textures" Abstracted Aspen Tree palette knife painting by Niki Gulley

"Natural Textures III" ©2015 Niki Gulley
24" x 36" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

In this painting I wanted the focus to be on texture. Usually I paint with a lot of color, but I opted to use a limited palette on this piece to really concentrate on the peeling bark of the aspen trees. Bordering on the edge of abstraction and the cusp of realism, Natural Textures is loaded with layers and layers of paint, built up with thin glazes and then palette knife to create extreme dimension. Choosing to come in extremely close on the subject, I played around with various strokes and paint thicknesses to add depth and energy. At the end, I had to throw in a few of my signature strokes of color – a splash of gold, some touches of lavender, and just a dab of fire-engine red for added excitement and unexpected color twists.

"Natural Textures" is available through the Good Art Company Gallery in Fredericksburg, TX (http://www.goodartcompany.com/gac/.)

Vanishing Violet Irises and an Ice Storm Rescue Story - Flower Painting Classes and Workshops by Nancy Medina Art

 Vanishing Violet Irises
by Nancy Medina
14X14
Palette Knife/Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

First thing this morning after checking in at the studio/office with the bosses/pugs, I set out in my business casual bathrobe to the back yard post haste with a pair of scissors. My mission, not to frighten the neighbors (although this is sometimes the result of these types of excursions), but to rescue my purple irises from the impending ice storm. Apologizing profusely as I snipped their bright stems as low to the ground as I dared without damaging the mama plants, I hastily rushed these four beauties indoors to fresh water resuscitation in a glass vase. Tonight they held up quite well under my hot studio lights, just long enough to inspire a bit of color, flare, and fun purple splash onto a nearby canvas. Stay tuned, tomorrow we could be in for more violet, if these ladies do not vanish overnight.

Original Contemporary Modern Art Abstract Paintings by Filomena de Andrade Booth

Desert Lights
24"x24"x1.5"
Acrylic on heavily textured canvas

Although it's mid-February and everything outside is covered in a thin sheet of glistening ice, my thoughts are of warmer days.

Desert Lights is an abstracted, impressionistic painting reminiscent of pueblo cliff dwellings.  I haven't visited that part of the American Southwest yet, but it is definitely on my bucket list!

This original abstract painting measures 24"x24".  The heavily textured canvas is gallery wrapped on 1.5" deep bars.  The painting wraps around the sides and does not need to be framed.  It is wired and ready to hang.

Garden Dreamer Iris Path and Surprises in the Flower Beds - Flower Painting Classes and Workshops by Nancy Medina Art

 Garden Dreamer Iris Path
by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

On new year's day I had one beautiful, frozen white iris in my garden. Sadly, I did not see it until it was almost wilted. Today I was so excited to see a plethora of purple in my iris beds, these lovely bloomers decided to thumb their little iris noses at winter! I do hope it will be a good spring for my garden this year, and they don't all bloom too early. Sending happy thoughts for healthy rhizomes, and especially hoping the black iris blooms in April again!

Early bloomers testing the winter temps today!

Blue Hearts Cottage
by Nancy Medina

Blue Hearts Cottage is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio, a little scene from Coronado Island, California. I took the liberty of adding two tiny carved hearts under the window, the Valentine's Day holiday lasts quite a while here, it seems. Just inside the entryway on the little carved table in the foyer you'll find a box of Godiva chocolates. I saved one of the truffles especially for you...if you hurry it might still be there!

Contemporary Birch Tree Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Embracing the Moment" ©2015 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 24" x 48" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

I wanted this painting to be about the power and energy in nature to invigorate your spirit, so I chose to use warm vivid colors and thick staccato strokes to add to that feeling. I placed the fall foliage in diagonal sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance on a beautiful fall day.

"Diagonal Shadows" - New White Rock Lake Painting by Niki Gulley

“Diagonal Shadows” White Rock Lake ©2015 Niki Gulley
12” x 24” oil on canvas

Sunset draws lengthening shadows across the grassy waters edge at Sunset Bay, White Rock. The lake shimmers in the evening glow as sky high above fills with deep blues and before you the soft, moody colors stretch out, long lines beckoning you into the complex diagonal composition. Rich texture models the leaves, branches and tree trunk rimmed in the sunset and shadow. Vivid masses of color form the foliage on the opposite bank, fall at its peak. The long cast shadows draw you into the tranquil landscape and the peaceful, dreamy sunset at White Rock Lake.

The large parrot tulips that spent a weekend partying with us in my North Texas Valentine's workshop lost their perk today. All that chocolate and too many donuts clearly took their toll, as they drooped and lost their petals, and were consigned, sadly, to the waste bin shortly after this painting was completed. Thank you so much, valiant bloomers, for staying up! Wait, that didn't sound quite like I had intended....

New Tuscany Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Spring's Escape," Tuscany ©2015 Niki Gulley
24" x 24" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas set inside an espresso floater frame

Inspired by our travels to Italy, cypress trees rise out of the vast open landscape signaling that you have arrived in Tuscany! Perched on a hilltop with its long curving driveway, this villa is set against the perfect backdrop for a romantic escape. Rows of soft wheat sway in the breeze and draw your eye back to the rolling hills and beautiful billowing clouds. Painted with palette knife and thick oil paint, this canvas is loaded with movement, color and dimension.

Hothouse Sunnies was one of my six class demonstrations during my flower and landscape painting workshop in North Texas this weekend. The tulips we painted are still blooming, the gift that keeps on giving and my house is filled with fresh flowers - one of the fringe benefits of being a flower painting teacher! I love my job.... Another great perk, besides helpers who are cute and furry and four-footed, is getting to travel and teach - my next European destination is coming up in June and you are invited! Painters and non-painters alike are welcome - I'm saving a poppy with your name on it!
