New "Morning Glow" oil painting of White Rock Lake by Dallas Artist Niki Gulley

"Morning Glow, White Rock Lake" ©2016 Niki Gulley
oil on canvas • 20" x 16"

On a peaceful spring morning, I set up my easel at White Rock Lake to capture the sun rising behind this beautiful, tangled Cottonwood tree. I liked how the warm light showed off the tree's curves and textured bark, and I chose this vertical composition to show off its size and strength. In the distance, the sun glistens along the water's surface and I hope this scene lifts your spirits for what the day has to bring.

New "Autumn Serenade" Palette Knife Fall Foliage Painting by Niki Gulley

"Autumn Serenade"  ©2016 Niki Gulley
36" x 48" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Shimmering colors of autumn: Aspen, Oak and the forest of trees quiver, their light graceful leaves tremble and quake, silver and gold, scarlet and tangerine, with each light breeze. There is the quiet energy of change coming and vibrant color charges the woods. Crisp fall mountain air, slender trunks cut bright strokes of white against a dazzling kaleidoscope of colors. Staccato strokes and shimmering hues add to the feeling of change in the air and suggest the breeze whistling through the foliage.

"Looking Up" New Red Barn oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Looking Up” ©2015 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 18" x 24” textured oil painting

Recently sold! Full of fun and whimsy, I not only wanted to show the personality of this red barn but also make you feel like a kid again, climbing trees, swinging from their branches and returning to a simpler time in your childhood. Hinting that the barn has humanlike features, I feel like it, too, is inviting you to come play inside. Using vivid colors, distorted perspective and energetic thick oil paint strokes, I hope "Looking Up" brings joy to your home and reminds you of the simpler pleasures when you were a kid.

New "Fall's Carnival" by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Fall's Carnival" ©2016 Niki Gulley
30" x 40" textured oil painting on gallery wrap canvas

Painted with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives so that this canvas is loaded with texture and bursting with color, flickering autumn leaves seem to almost dance in a gentle breeze. I wanted this landscape to be filled with movement and vivacity, so I incorporated a lot of diagonal and curving shapes in the design to suggest that feeling. Contrasting short staccato strokes against blended passages with my palette knives, also increase that sense of motion. One zig zag passage of crimson foliage creates a focal point in the tangle of leaves and turnks while adding energy to the scene. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of walking through the woods on a beautiful fall day, letting your cares slip away and your spirit being invigorated.

"Fall's Carnival" along with several of my new palette knife paintings will be exhibiting at the Good Art Company Gallery in Fredericksburg, TX. 30" x 48" textured oil painting

Shimmering in golden light, this backlit grove of aspen trees reaches tall, leaning left and then right towards the sun as it grew. The peeling trunks almost seem to move, even chatting with one another. A few trees weren't so lucky and lay fallen at their feet, while the whole scene is filled with color, texture and movement to suggest the power of nature and its ability to enhance your spirit.

Just Sold - "Perseverance" by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

Perseverance ©2016 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 48" x 36" • Textured oil painting on canvas

During one of our plein air painting workshops that we lead in Santa Fe, we chose this beautiful location near Georgia O'Keefe's home of Ghost Ranch. I loved the way the sun illuminated the rocky cliffs and the robust, fluffy clouds that drifted above us. Reaching for the sky, hopeful and steadfast, this one lone tree persevered despite the odds.

"Aqua Dreams" Palette Knife Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Aqua Dreams” ©2016 Niki Gulley
36” x 60” textured oil on canvas

When we arrived at this tranquil spot, the early morning light was very cool in color, but as the sun began to rise from the horizon, it shone this beautiful warm light that shimmered on the water’s surface and cast its hope of what was to come from the brand new day. I remember the peacefulness I felt in that moment, and a sense that anything was possible. In Aqua Dreams, by showing the contrast in the cool aqua/blues in the foreground waters against the warm golden glow on the distant pond’s edge, I wanted to share that feeling of hope and promise communicated by nature.

"Texas Pride II" ©2015 Niki Gulley

I painted these Texas bluebonnets and with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve depth and texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and energy. In this wildflower series, I've painted the scene around the edges of the canvas on 1 and 1/2" deep stretcher bars so that the painting can be hung without a frame for a contemporary look. Or, I also have a beautiful espresso floater frame where you can still see the painted edges of the canvas if you prefer framed artwork.
