My inspiration for this painting was a beautiful arrangement that son in-law Wes gave to daughter Lindsay. I asked what the occasion was......."just because" was the answer that I got. I used thick strokes with the palette knife.

This painting is currently hanging at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas.  Sharon Hodges, Steve Hahn and I were interviewed for an article published last week in the local paper.  Click for the article about Dutch Art Gallery's 50 year anniversary.  I am working on a series of florals for an upcoming show...and getting ready for Christmas!  Thanks for looking at this blog, Kay

Contemporary Palette Knife Painting

This painting is still on my easel, but I signed it and it needs to dry.  I put out greens, whites and grays and mixed piles and piles of paint on my palette, grabbed the palette knife and started with my darks first.  I pushed and pulled the paint, added a small amount of raw umber and cad red to the palette.  I had not planned on going this far with the painting, but once I started, I couldn't stop.  I have a beautiful frame to put on it...will post it framed up when it dries.  Contact Kay for purchasing information.

I was painting a floral landscape yesterday, and had started this little panel, and added some dark greens and violets, giving it more depth and interest.  In this still life, the little jar is holding three flowers...very simple.  The palette knife gives it some texture.  Contact Kay

Day #18 in the 30/30 Paint Challenge

This little palette knife painting was inspired by a small bouquet of pink and coral flowers that are at the studio.  I simplified the bouquet, and grayed down the colors, and went abstract.  I started to use a brush to apply the paint, but this painting called for the palette knife.  The colors used are left over from yesterday's painting...I freeze my oils so they don't dry out...I have piles of corals, pinks and lavenders in the freezer, so I might have another painting with the same colors in the near future.  I am happy with the composition, paint application and the way it turned out.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay

Contemporary Floral Landscape

Today is day 4 of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge

I have been working on a series of floral landscape paintings for the gallery in Santa Fe.  I have explored different size canvases, different color palettes, and different techniques.  Here I used the palette knife to get thicker, more textured flowers in the foreground.  The clouds and horizon have softer brush strokes.  The path fades away into the background....allowing the viewer to drift through the field.  Contact Kay for more information on this piece.

This painting has a new home!  This is one of my Wildflower Landscapes that I painted in 2014.  I worked on a series of them, and have explored many possibilities with this subject matter.  I am starting next year out with a paint challenge, and hoping to have a creative and productive 2015.  I think I will paint whatever I feel like painting...with Roosters and Cows at the top of my list.  I hope you all have a safe and fun New Years Eve!  Kay

Raw natural linen is what I painted this still life on.  The red tulips were gorgeous in an arrangement that was leftover from a Valentine's Day gift...I loved the shapes of the flowers and the refection in the glass vase with the stems in it.  I put some dark torrit grey paint at the vase...to ground it. I used the palette knife on this linen, and let the natural linen show through, not painting it all out.  Thick, thick, thick paint adds texture and interest to this contemporary floral, giving it an abstract quality. I love the passion and energy in the color red, so I thought it would be fun to play with the still life I had set up of roses and make a painting where red was the dominant color.  In person, seeing these roses at life size, I wanted the viewer to be swept up in the movement and emotion of this piece. Utilizing flowing spirals, weaving back and forth, playful thick and thin paint in bold, loose strokes, ruby petals emerging and disappearing, all meant to tease the eye and excite your senses.
