I am beginning to post small paintings I've done recently painted on board.  These
are fun to do and they are small enough that they can be put on easels or
framed.

Joyful Day by Kay Wyne

Joyful Day
Contemporary Floral Landscape
60" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
I love to paint on a large surface.  It is liberating to make big wide brushstrokes with a brush or apply loads of paint with a palette knife.  A 60" x 36" canvas is fun, challenging and my image/subject matter is always changing....as you can see below I did stop and take some pics along my painting journey.

First, I had an idea in my head and thought that I would sketch it out with charcoal on the canvas.  Then I scrubbed in some colors.  And more colors.  Finally getting the white canvas covered up.

I wanted my color palette to be in cool lavenders and greys....and some greens.  I got off-track as you can see in the fifth photo.  I cut loose with some oranges, reds, and blues.  The next day when I came into the studio, I realized that I had gotten de-railed.  So I spent more than two hours mixing wonderful purples. magentas, greens, and greys to bring the colors back to my original plan.  Of course I used huge amounts of oils and there is texture and depth to this painting.

This painting is drying at the studio, and tomorrow is day #1 in Leslie Saeta's 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge.  Check out Leslie's blog...It's always fun to see what everyone is posting on a daily basis.  Thanks for looking at my blog....Have an artful day.  Kay Wyne

Provence Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams, Day 2

Day 3, Provence Art Trek: Les Baux / Chateauneuf
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop
with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
7" x 5" textured oil painting

On the second day of our Provence Art Trek, we visited the picturesque town of Les Baux, perched atop its rocky outcropping with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside below. Some folks visited the castle, galleries and shops while the painters set up in this quiet plaza capturing the unique stone residences, medieval cathedral or picturesque courtyard.

In the afternoon we went to one of the most renowned wine towns in the world and sampled some amazing Chateaunef du Pape wines.

Next summer we will be leading an Art Trek to Spain and the following year we will be headed to Tuscany, England and Ireland, so if you've always dreamed of painting, photographing and sightseeing in Europe, please join us for one of these amazing trip! Details will be coming soon on nikigulley.com/artreks.

Visiting Arles with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams, Provence Art Trek 2015

Day 1, Afternoon Location: Arles
Provence Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
9" x 12" textured oil painting by Niki Gulley

In the afternoon, we visited the ancient Roman city of Arles, marveling at its in tact amphitheater from 90 AD, triumphal arch, and ancient theater, while retracing the footsteps of Van Gogh and seeing his colorful vision of rather ordinary painting locations. Last stop on our Van Gogh tour, we chose to paint at the asylum where he stayed, creating our own versions of the lovely courtyard garden.

That night, we feasted on mussels, sea bream, various meat dishes and mouth-watering pastries at an award-winning restaurant. Bon Appetit!

Next summer we will be leading an Art Trek to Spain and the following year we will be headed to Tuscany, England and Ireland, so if you've always dreamed of painting, photographing and sightseeing in Europe, please join us for one of these amazing trip! Provence Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Day 1, Provence Art Trek
12" x 9" textured oil painting by Niki Gulley

On the first night of our Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop that my husband, Scott Williams, and I led in southern France, we arrived at our B and B and went into town that evening for a wine tasting and amazing dinner at a Michelin-star restaurant. The food was out of this world, the weather was perfect for dining outside, and our new group was great company!

The next morning, our painters stayed at our b and b and painted right there since the grounds were so beautiful. The light raking across the balcony and shutters was so dramatic, and I loved how the gnarly trees framed the composition to make a window within a window. Meanwhile, the photographers visited a nearby 11th century Abbey and took some incredible photographs. We met up later that day and headed to the nearby town of Arles for lunch.

Wine tasting in Provence.

Original Contemporary Modern Art Abstract Paintings by Filomena de Andrade Booth

Fire and Ice
30" x 40" x1.5"
Acrylic on textured canvas
Sold

Moving is not fun!!
It's been a while since I have been able to do anything related to my artwork.  We sold our home in China Spring, Texas earlier this month and now we are in sunny Florida.  I had been thinking of making this move for some time because my husband and I had no family in Texas and we were missing our family, especially our little grandchildren.  So here we are!

It's amazing how many things we manage to accumulate over the years. My mother-in-law always said that "two moves are as good as a fire" and I think she was right.  I tried to scale down on those things we didn't need anymore, but we still managed to cram 22,000 lbs. of stuff on to the moving van.  Some of that weight was a small pick up truck, but just the same, it's still a lot of stuff!!

Anyway, my new studio isn't quite as big as my Texas studio, but I decided to turn one of the spare bedrooms into my office/packing area.  Once I unpack everything and decide where everything goes, I should be able to get back into the swing of things again.

In case you were wondering, the three kids (cats) made out alright on the long 2 day car trip and hotel stays.  We did have to borrow a broom from the front desk to scoot them out from under the bed, but other than that, we all survived.  Now they are enjoying the new house and especially the screened patio.  Our house overlooks a lake and the news around here is that there are a couple of gators that make it their home.  I'll make it my business to stay as far away as possible from those critters!

The painting shown here, Fire and Ice, just sold to a collector from York, PA.

French Roses and All My Best From Paris - Nancy Medina Art Classes and Videos

French Roses
by Nancy Medina
20X20
Oil on Deep Gallery Wrap Canvas, Sold

Class Demonstration, Frayssinet, France

It's important to learn from your travel experiences, taking note of those important teaching moments,  such as taking selfies facing upward into the rain in front of the Eiffel tower with your eyes open is an exercise in futility. Cafe hopping across Paris with a total disregard for a reasonable eating schedule is highly encouraged. Searching for the Sennelier art store (which happens to reside across from the Musee d'Orsay which rhymes with Monet) is a worthy pursuit, even if you do the entire pilgrimage at sunset, knowing full well the oldest art store in Paris will be closed when you arrive.

I'm sharing all the best videos, photos, and moments from my month of teaching in France with you on my Facebook fan page, including our tour of Monet's Garden in Giverny. Read more....

Just Sold - "Golden Aura II" Palette Knife Birch Painting by Niki Gulley

"Golden Aura II" ©2015 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 36" x 48" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Just Sold! Painted with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives so that this canvas is loaded with texture and bursting with color, flickering autumn leaves seem to almost dance in a gentle breeze. I wanted this scene to be filled with movement and energy, so I incorporated a lot of diagonal and curving shapes in the design to suggest that feeling. While combining short staccato strokes along with long sweeping passes with my palette knives also increase that sense of motion. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of walking through the woods on a beautiful fall day, letting your cares slip away and your spirit being invigorated.

Email me for more information on this birch painting.

How Now Brown Cow by Kay Wyne

How Now Brown Cow
40" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Bovine Series
Standing in his field, this contemporary cow is looking right at you.  He has the stare going on, and he is as still as a statue.  I had seen this handsome guy at the Ft. Worth Stock Show and had to paint him.  He is dry and ready to hang on the wall.  I painted the sides of the gallery wrap canvas, so framing is optional. Contact Kay Wyne for purchasing information.  Thanks, Kay

Color of Summer by Kay Wyne

Color of Summer
10" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This landscape was painted with a palette knife.....all the way.  It was fun to paint because I mixed my paints as I moved the paint around.  There is texture on the surface of the canvas panel because I put in thick chunks of paint as I worked on this painting.  Color of Summer is framed in a handsome frame, and is needs a new home!  Contact Kay Wyne for purchasing info.  Thanks for looking.....Kay

Festive, sun-filled blossoms dance in the gentle breeze, filling the field with sweet fragrance. This textured painting captures a carefree summer morning with sunflowers overflowing the foreground, filling up the field with joy under sunny skies as voluminous clouds drift by overhead.

Sunshine by Kay Wyne

Sunshine
10" x 10" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Rooster Series
This small rooster is dry now and ready for a new home.  I think Sunshine would look great on a kitchen wall or sitting on a countertop.  I painted this colorful rooster so that he is nestled in the grass, and pops with the contrasting black background.  I used a wide flat bright brush all the way on this fine feathered friend...you can see the spontaneous strokes in the grass and the feathers.  Contact Kay for more info on Sunshine.  Thanks for looking at this blog.  Kay
