New Palette Knife Lavender Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Fragrant Convergence" ©2016 Niki Gulley
24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

The lavender fields in Provence are incredible – perfectly manicured rows and rows of an explosion of violet as far as the eye can see. I wanted to try something different in this painting, arranging the purple waves vertically to draw your eye up to the lone tree in the distance. One puffy cloud mirrors its shape as the lavender columns create a flowing rhythm. Perspective lines all converge, leading you to this joyful spot and I hope you can smell the amazing aromas and feel your spirits lifted while gazing into this scene!

New "Happy Thoughts" Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Happy Thoughts II" ©2016 Niki Gulley
24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Inspired by our travels to Provence, I painted these cheerful sunflowers with extremely thick oil paint and palette knife so that the resulting image leaps off the canvas and is loaded with energy, color and texture.

SOLD- Bougainvillea by Ann McCann 20 X 20 Oil

(c)Ann McCann 2016

This was one of the larger paintings at my show. It was popular. I could have sold it more than once! Although this scene is from Sanibel Island in Florida, it reminded my friend of spending time in Mexico. Good memories I assume......

SOLD- Cape Cod Marsh Road by Ann McCann 8 X 8 Oil

(c)Ann McCann 2016

A long time friend of mine saw this at my show, and said he had to have it. I was very flattered, since he usually likes much tighter paintings. I am glad that it is going to a good home.

New Palette Knife Iris Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

"Flowing into Spring III" ©2016 Niki Gulley
24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas • Lee Park, Dallas

Painted on location at Lee Park in Dallas, I loved how the irises signaled that spring was in full bloom. Standing tall, anchoring this corner of the creek these purple blooms lead your eye up through the canvas, along the water's edge to the stone bridge in the distance. The soft light adds to the peacefulness of this tranquil spot, and I hope all of your cares are transported away while lifting your spirits.

I posted another Facebook live video today, my third one - and the good news is, I succeeded in not accidentally letting my house slippers show in the film. I've also learned that if I keep kibble on hand, I can lure her majesty, AnnieBee, into posing for her admirers during part of the shoot. This is always a big hit. I was feeling downright smart about the whole thing, until I lost my wifi connection and the video cut short just a bit! whoospie! If you missed the video clip, you can see it by clicking here. I shared a peek at my new little bistro table and chairs, and my new cute little squishable peony pillows that arrived a few days ago. But I digress!

I have a big announcement to make, but not....quite....yet! I'll be sharing it in my next newsletter and if you love color, if you love painting, and if you love FREE stuff, you won't want to miss it. Have you signed up yet? I sure hope so, the early bird gets the blossom, flower friends!

My iris garden is blooming and it's almost the end of December. Each morning I awaken, expecting the cold to stop this unexpected spell of blossoms, and more and more flowers are opening. I've decided to see this bounty as a gift from my newest guardian angel, my Mother. Thanks Mom, for the beauty!
I'm super excited to be the first painting artist to join the Vita Verde team for a destination workshop to Sant'Angelo in Vado, Italy. You are invited, flower friends, to join me in the heart of Italy for open air markets, wine tastings, a day trip to the Adriatic Sea, and all the art and culture your heart desires. You can learn more and see the movie highlights on my web site. Early bird discounts are good until the end of the year so don't delay! Click here for the movie!

New Palette Knife Painting from the Dallas Arboretum by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, Dallas Arboretum
©2016 Niki Gulley

I painted this scene from the Dallas Arboretum on location a few weeks ago when the weather was beautiful and the spring buds were in full bloom. I was attracted to this Azalea trail with the vivid fuchsia blossoms tucked away from the crowds in this cool, shady, peaceful garden. Choosing a  vertical panoramic format leads your eye from the azaleas to wander up the trail towards the light and the beautiful dogwood tree in the distance, all while lifting your spirits.

Irises in the Hood by Ann McCann 20 X 20 Oil

This is a house in my neighborhood from the early 1900s. My focus in this painting was the beautiful purple irises, but I also captured a glimpse of the house at the top of the hill. This is a great neighborhood, the Belmont Addition in Dallas.

Twister by Kay Wyne

Twister
40" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract
I was thinking of all the severe weather we are having in Texas when I named this contemporary abstract.  The current weather situation of flooding and high winds have left a path of destruction.  On my canvas, the eye of the storm on the canvas is swirling, as if I am looking at a tornado from an aerial view.  The muddy greys and violets are mixed in with the olive greens...it's not my usual color palette.  You can see the wide swipes or strokes that I took with the palette knife, leaving some texture on the canvas.  This painting is drying in the studio...Contact ME for more information on this painting.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay

I love tulips being one of the first flowers to announce that winter has officially ended, so I focused on these colorful red and white striped ones in the foreground, which contrast so well against the complimentary green leaves and grasses. I also liked how their height leads you back into the distant flower beds and onto the Degolyer house in the background, so I chose this vertical panorama format to accentuate that feeling. Loaded with thick oil paint, texture and movement, I hope you can feel the joy that spring is in the air!

If you're in the DFW next weekend and you'd like to see more of my textured landscape oil paintings, please stop by my display at the Dallas Arboretum's Artscape.

Willow City Loop Bluebonnets by Ann McCann 9 X 12 Oil

Here is my first plein air painting from a recent trip to the Texas Hill country. For those of you have gone on the Willow City Loop in the past month, you will recognize this spot! It is gorgeous and one of the few places that is not fenced. Disney could not have done a better job here! I will be painting more from this location.

New Turtle Creek Azalea Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, Turtle Creek
©2016 Niki Gulley

Painted on location a couple of weeks ago, I set up my easel in front of these prolific azalea bushes along Turtle Creek. The vibrant pinks and fuchsia were so full of life set against the cool green leaves, that I wanted to capture not only that vivid spring color but also the elegant sycamore tree in the distance with its speckled white bark.  Contrasting the height of the vertical tree against the horizontal blooms, I chose this vertical panoramic canvas, and repeating shapes throughout creates a harmony to the overall scene. Painted with palette knife and lots of texture, I hope you can feel the beauty and energy of a spring day in Texas.

If you're in the DFW area next weekend and you'd like to see more of my textured landscape oil paintings, please stop by my display at the Dallas Arboretum's Artscape.

Finish Line by Kay Wyne

Finish Line
16" x 12" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Equine Painting
The race is on!  I haven't painted a racehorse painting for a couple of years, and thought it was time to revisit the subject matter of the horse.  I wanted to express the strength and speed of horses at the finish line in this painting.  I didn't get fussy with the details, and put the jockeys in colorful silks.  This painting does need a frame, and it will be entered in a spring show.  Thanks for looking at this blog...contact Kay for more information on my art.  I will be back in the studio working on a commission this week.  KMW

Vortex Abstract by Kay Wyne

Vortex
Abstract Diptych - Vortex I and II
40" x 60" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
These two canvases started out as a landscape, but ended up with the energy and movement of a vortex.  (According to my studio mates.)  This was a painting that ended up going in a different direction once I got into it.  I had put my darks in first, and went over-board, and after letting it sit on my easel for several weeks, I painted out the darks, and scraped some of the dark greens and grey out.  My favorite colors in this are the cad oranges mixed with the pinky beiges.  There is a hint of turqoise under the layers of greens. The blues and grey are beautiful...I mixed and mixed piles of them and layered them on with the palette knife.  There is a lot of depth and texture.  It is drying at the studio.  Contact Kay Wyne for more information on this diptych.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay
