New Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

"Floating Expressions II" ©2017 Niki Gulley
24" x 24" textured mixed media painting on wrap around canvas

In this painting series, I wanted the focus to be on texture. Usually I paint with a lot of color, but I opted to use a limited palette on these pieces to really concentrate on the peeling bark of the aspen trees. Bordering on the edge of abstraction and the cusp of realism, Floating Expressions is loaded with layers and layers of paint, built up with thin glazes and then palette knife to create extreme dimension. Choosing to come in extremely close on the subject, I played around with various strokes and paint thicknesses to add depth and energy. At the end, I had to throw in a few of my signature strokes of color – a splash of gold, some touches of purple, and just a dab of fire-engine red for added excitement and unexpected color twists.

New "Marching into Autumn" Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Marching into Autumn" ©2016 Niki Gulley
10" x 20" textured oil on canvas

I painted this colorful autumn scene near my home when the fall foliage was first starting to appear. I loved the vibrant reds, oranges and yellows of the cypress contrasted against the multitude of greens surrounding it. The patterns of the shadows underneath the trees created a sort of rhythm and I played up the angles of the trees and strokes to add to that feeling of a driving beat. I hope you, too, can feel the energy and joy of being surrounded by nature as autumn approaches.

New "Momentum" Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

“Momentum" ©2016 Niki Gulley
24" x 48" textured mixed media painting on wrap around canvas

Remember the days of running through piles of raked leaves, hearing the sounds of soft crunching underfoot as leaves go flying all around? A beautiful kaleidoscope of reds, golds and oranges on a crisp fall day! I painted Momentum to bring back those memories of a carefree time and place, when life was simple and playing with friends and siblings was the highlight of your day. Painted with thick oil paint and palette knives, I've left staccato strokes and diagonal lines to add to the feeling of motion, joy and energy while the three dimensionality of the paint, bring the scene to life.

New "Spring's Glory," Texas Hill Country oil painting by Niki Gulley

"Spring’s Glory," Texas Hill Country ©2016 Niki Gulley
36” x 60” textured oil painting on gallery wrap canvas

“Spring’s Glory” was inspired by a trip to the Texas Hill Country. The spring conditions were perfect, and the bluebonnets were amazing! While we were near Fredericksburg, we took a scenic drive along the Willow City Look and as we approached the top of a hill about half way around, we were greeted by this gorgeous view of the rolling hills and bluebonnets in full bloom. Then, to top it off the sun was setting in the distance casting its golden glow and backlighting the wildflowers. I had to capture the magical moment, enhancing the kaleidoscope of colors in the sky and along the ground. Arranging clouds, the road and rows of bluebonnets in rhythmic sweeping shapes to create a harmonious landscape that flows with light, texture and color, and suggest a feeling of optimism about what’s to come.

Just Sold - "Creating Memories" Palette Knife Oil Painting of Venice, Italy by Niki Gulley

"Creating Memories," Venice ©2016 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 24" x 36" • textured oil painting

Inspired from our first trip to Italy, I fell in love with everything about Venice. The city feels preserved in time with all transportation happening on water versus roads. The architecture, art, history, and people are all fascinating, the food and wine delicious, and it was such a romantic place to visit. So in this painting, I captured a lone gondola to convey that feeling of lazily drifting along with your loved one down this brick canal filled with history and future memories.

Just Sold - "Interplay" Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

"Interplay" ©2016 by Niki Gulley
SOLD • 36" x 48" original textured oil painting

Flickering autumn leaves seem to almost dance in a gentle breeze. I wanted this scene to be filled with movement and energy, so I incorporated a lot of diagonal and curving shapes in the design to suggest that feeling. Contrasting short staccato strokes against blended passages with my palette knives, also increase that sense of motion. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of walking through the woods on a beautiful fall day, letting your cares slip away and your spirit being invigorated.

New "Colorful Carousel" Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

"Colorful Carousel" ©2016 by Niki Gulley
 36" x 60" original textured oil painting

I wanted this painting to be about the power and energy in nature to invigorate your spirit, so I chose to use warm vivid colors contrasted against cool underbrush while utilizing thick staccato strokes to add to that feeling. I placed the fall foliage in curving sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance on a beautiful fall day.

New Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

"Intertwining Beauty" ©2016 Niki Gulley
36" x 60" textured oil on canvas

Intertwining Beauty was inspired by a recent trip to the Sangre de Cristo mountains. The aspen forest was so dense and beautiful. I loved the pops of vibrant fall colors peeking through the tall, tangled, web of white knobby trunks. Ruby reds grab your attention while staccato strokes of emerald, amethyst and topaz lead your eye around the canvas. I hope you can feel the energy found in nature and its power to invigorate your spirit.

I painted these aspen trees with extremely thick paint and palette knife. The resulting canvas is loaded with texture, color and energy! I've painted it on 1 and 1/2 inch deep stretcher bars, with the image continuing around the edges so that it can be hung as is frameless for a contemporary look.
